Artist Statement

This Is All I Knew is a solo exhibition exploring the complexity of emotional transformation through symbolic paintings, objects, and sculptural works. Drawing from personal experiences of instability, healing, and rediscovery, the artist presents a visual narrative that traces the evolution of inner states—grief, fear, pride, hope, and more—as they shift into strength, clarity, and self-awareness.

One central work reimagines a sacred gathering as a meeting of former selves, each embodying a different emotional truth. Across the exhibition, symbolic figures serve as mirrors of transformation—inviting reflection on personal values, shifting identity, and the reclamation of an inner moral compass.

This Is All I Knew is not a declaration of certainty, but a tender reckoning with the past—and an invitation to witness the raw, sometimes messy, always human process of becoming.

Bio

Emiko Mizukami was born and raised in Fukui, Japan, surrounded by the sea and mountains. She now lives and works in North Vancouver, Canada, once again connected to both landscape and water. A self-taught artist based at 1000 Parker Street Studios in East Vancouver, Emiko creates paintings and sculptures that evoke the quiet magic of interior spaces, memory, and transformation.

Her work is rooted in still life but layered with narrative — blending imagined rooms, vintage furniture, flowers, fruit, and patterns that recall both personal and collective nostalgia. Each composition becomes a container for emotion, reflection, and story.

Emiko’s early connection to her mother and grandmother instilled a love for working with her hands through traditional crafts, food preservation, and quiet acts of care. This tactile upbringing continues to inform her intuitive process, where color, texture, and symbolism unfold through oil and acrylic. Her paintings act as a bridge between the ordinary and the poetic — tender invitations into worlds both familiar and dreamlike.
