A friend said, ‘You should paint old-growth cedars’. So, I did.

I made portraits of individual trees, focusing on the tree - not the forest.

I echoed the paintings of Lucas Cranach the Elder - surrounding each

portrait with pure pastel colours.  Within solid hues I left spaces naked of paint, which, when stained blue, reverberate with the dance of the trunks, the contortions of great branches, and the power and resilience of the giant trees.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Haughton
