Bio

Elena Underhill is a Vancouver-based visual artist and educator who has a life-long practice of sketching as a way of seeing.

Born in Montreal to artist parents, Elena studied Fine Arts and Graphic Design at Kootenay School of Art and Emily Carr University. Her work has included illustration, design and instruction for BCIT and Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

Through her painting and sketchbook practice she explores the connections between places, memory and lived experience, moments encountered both close to home and farther away.

Artist Statement

I take my sketchbook with me everywhere.  On the mountains, by the water and in the woods. Hay-on-Wye, in Wales, has inspired sketches of the ancient forests. Travel to Croatia, on Madjerkin Breg. observing and drawing the local traditions and culture have left me feeling warmly welcomed. Sarajevo, Bosnia has impressed and moved me with its war-torn history and the resilience of its people.

My sketches reflect an ongoing practice of observation, visual inquiry and a keen desire to understand the day-to-day life in various cultures. As I draw and paint, I feel connected and at ease with the world.
