Artist Statement

The recent body of work in oil and acrylic continues to explore unique vocabulary to visually interpret my understanding of nature and land, presenting a poetic yet stylized landscape world that reflects on personal history and memories, communal sentiments, even a much broader cultural reference.

My practice is a balance of analyzed forms or lines, subdued lyrical palette, calligraphic and highly suggestive brushwork. Making a way through the thicket of visual information, my imagery largely references North American landscape meanwhile consciously distills aesthetic and philosophical inspirations from traditional Chinese monochromatic landscape painting, which is often abstract, symbolic and with quality of serenity and sublimeness. Through my constructed world of mountains, rivers and trees, I thrive to create a different perspective looking at nature surroundings, to resonate or evoke an atmosphere of nostalgia, and provide spiritual sanctuary amid a era of redefining and rebuilding.

My works hereby pay deep reverence to the land that silently endures human’s history of egomania, at a ephemeral moment that extends seamlessly into the past and the future.
